Now, I'm no farrier, I'm a dog groomer, but I've always wanted to do some experiments with a hoof trimming knife. This one came across Vine so I grabbed it. My plan was to see if I could use it to trim my Doberman's nails. (I do NOT recommend doing this. I'm a professional. Do not try this at home.) Her nails are thick and hard and almost impossible to get through with traditional dog nail clippers, so I wanted to see if a hoof knife could get through. I figured hoof horn has to be tougher than a dog's nails, right? Well... either her nails are even stronger than hoof horn, or this knife is incredibly dull. I'm pretty sure it's just dull. If I run my finger along it, I can feel that it's sharp, but it doesn't even slice the top layer of skin, and I can feel little nicks in the metal. It didn't even scratch her nail. I even tried pushing it into silicone and it didn't cut it at all. I guess I got a dud. I suppose I'm going to have to figure out how to sharpen it.It's otherwise a really gorgeous tool. It has a good weight and is really comfortable in the hand.

We try to save ourselves a little at our facility by trimming many of our own horses. We have a 34 stall facility in the PNW. This knife feels good in the hand, and is quite sharp. Ideally you would buy both a right and left handed model. I keep this one in the tote with all the others. These can easily be sharpened, and by having multiples of each type I've always got a sharp one on hand. A good value for the money.

This one is unusual in that it comes with a blade that is pretty sharp out of the bag. Most of the farrier knives I have gotten before needed to be sharpened before first use. This blade is sharp on one side only. Most of the farrier knives that I have are a dual sharp blade in that the blade is sharp on both sides. A bit over-priced considering that you can get a whole farrier's kit for the same price.

We have horses and donkeys and they need their feet cut back and shaped once every 2 months. Maybe a bit more when the grass is green. After years of watching and working with our farrier I am comfortable doing small adjustments on their hooves myself before the farrier makes her call.This knife is a medium quality 420 Magnetic Stainless Steel Blade, as advertised. It is common in hoove knifes and even surgical tools. It comes from the manufacturer sharp'ish. It needed a good edge put on with my sharpener, and good oil rub down. 420 steel is difficult to rust, but not impossible to rust. just clean it and light oil sheen after use.The blade managed to cut our four equines just fine and appears to hold an edge well.I notice there is a coupon making it cheaper than it was when I got it, so its a good deal if you need a serious tool for equine hooves. A good value.

I am not a farrier, so I don't do a lot of hacking away at my horse's hooves. I do occasionally cut off the stray piece of frog or need to dig around the sole for a stone bruise. At those times these things come in very handy. They are sharp and cut precisely where you aim. Can't really ask more from a knife.
